About these rates

These are international spot prices, refreshed every hour and converted with daily exchange rates. Jewellers’ prices include making charges and local premiums, so the price you pay in a shop is higher. For zakat, the value of the pure gold is what counts.

The silver price also sets two amounts people look for every year: Mehr-e-Fatimi and the minimum haq mehr, and the diyat amount in Pakistan (the value of 30,630 g of silver).

What does the gold rate mean for zakat?

• The nisab follows the rate. The gold nisab is 7.5 tola (87.48 g), about Rs 31,67,074 today, and the silver nisab 52.5 tola, about Rs 2,97,813. See nisab today for which one your madhab uses.
• Use the rate of your zakat date, not the price you paid. A rise in the gold price raises your zakat on the same jewellery.
• Use the pure-gold price. For 22K jewellery take 22/24 of the 24K price. Making charges and stones are not counted.
• Selling price, not buying price: some muftis say to value gold at what a jeweller would pay you for it, which is a little lower than the shop price. The international rate used here sits close to that buying-back price.

Sarafa rate vs. international rate

The Karachi and Lahore sarafa associations publish their own daily rate per tola. It starts from the same international price, then adds the cost of bringing gold into the country, the exchange rate in the open market and a local premium, so it is usually somewhat higher than the figure here. Silver rate today

1 tola of silver is about Rs 5,673 and 1 gram about Rs 486. Silver matters for zakat more than its price suggests: Hanafi scholars measure cash and mixed wealth against the silver nisab, so a family with modest savings can owe zakat even with no gold.
