How do you calculate zakat on gold? Work out the pure gold (weight × karat ÷ 24), value it at today’s 24K rate of about Rs 36,070 a gram, add your other zakatable wealth and, if the total reaches the nisab, pay 2.5%. Whether worn jewellery is counted depends on your madhab. (rate of )

How to calculate zakat on gold, step by step
- Weigh it. Use grams or tola (1 tola = 11.664 g). A jeweller’s receipt often gives the weight; if not, any jeweller can weigh it.
- Find the pure gold: weight × karat ÷ 24. For example 10 g of 22K gold contains 9.17 g of pure gold, and 10 g of 18K contains 7.5 g.
- Multiply by today’s 24K price per gram, about Rs 36,070 at the international rate.
- Add it to your other zakatable wealth (cash, savings, silver, business stock) and check the nisab.
- Pay 2.5% of the total, once a lunar year has passed.
Worked example in grams
Sara owns a 22K necklace of 40 g and 21K bangles of 30 g, and has Rs 3,00,000 in savings. Pure gold: 40 × 22 ÷ 24 = 36.67 g and 30 × 21 ÷ 24 = 26.25 g, so 62.92 g of pure gold. At an example price of Rs 37,000 a gram that is Rs 23,28,040. With her savings the total is Rs 26,28,040, well above the silver nisab, so in the Hanafi madhab her zakat is 2.5% = Rs 65,701. If she follows the Shafi’i, Maliki or Hanbali madhab and wears this jewellery, it is exempt, and only the savings are checked against the nisab. Put your own weights in the calculator above for today’s figure.

Gold coins and bars are usually 24K (99.9%). Pakistani jewellery is mostly 21K or 22K, Gulf jewellery 21K or 22K, and much Western jewellery 18K or 14K. If you do not know the karat, a jeweller can test it; the hallmark stamped inside (916 for 22K, 875 for 21K, 750 for 18K) also tells you.
Gold nisab
The nisab of gold is 87.48 g (7.5 tola), about Rs 31,55,387 today. If you own only gold and nothing else, zakat is due only when your pure gold reaches this weight. If you also have cash or silver, Hanafi scholars add everything together and use the silver nisab.
Worn jewellery
Hanafi and Ahl-e-Hadith: zakatable. Shafi’i, Maliki and Hanbali: exempt if permissible and worn. See zakat on jewellery in the 4 madhabs.
Whose gold is it?
Zakat is due from the owner. Jewellery a woman received at her wedding from her own family, or as mehr, is usually hers, so its zakat is on her; she may pay it from her own money, or her husband may pay it for her with her permission. Gold a family keeps for a daughter’s future wedding is owned by whoever has not yet given it away, usually the parents. If ownership is unclear, settle it in the family first, then calculate.
Inherited gold
Gold you inherit is counted like gold you bought, from the time your share is yours; see zakat on inherited wealth for when the zakat year starts. If the estate is not divided yet, the wirasat calculator shows each heir’s share of the gold in tola and grams.
