The bank’s nisab is not the shar’i nisab
People in Pakistan often mix up two different figures:
- The shar’i nisab is the value of 612.35 g of silver (or 87.48 g of gold) on your own zakat date. It decides whether zakat is due on all your wealth together: cash at home, every account, gold, business stock and the rest. It changes every hour with the silver price, and it is the figure at the top of this page.
- The bank deduction nisab is one rupee figure the government notifies shortly before Ramadan. Banks use it on 1 Ramadan, one account at a time: a savings account at or above it has 2.5% deducted. It is worked out from the silver price when it is set and then stays fixed for the year.
So an account below the bank’s figure is not deducted, but you may still owe zakat on it, because the shar’i nisab looks at everything you own. And a deduction by the bank does not settle your zakat on your gold or other accounts. Subtract what the bank took from your full zakat; see bank zakat deduction and the CZ-50 form.
Nisab in past years
The bank deduction nisab notified in Pakistan for each year, with its source. It rose sharply in 2026 because the silver price almost tripled.
| Year | Amount | Announced by (source) |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 (1447 AH) | Rs 5,03,529 | Ministry of Poverty Alleviation, 16 Feb 2026 (silver at Rs 9,591 a tola) |
| 2025 (1446 AH) | Rs 1,79,689 | Government of Pakistan, before Ramadan 2025 |
| 2024 (1445 AH) | Rs 1,35,179 | Ministry of Poverty Alleviation, before Ramadan 2024 |
| 2023 (1444 AH) | Rs 1,03,159 | Administrator General Zakat, March 2023 |
| 2022 (1443 AH) | Rs 88,927 | Government of Pakistan, March 2022 (some reports round it to Rs 88,000) |
| 2021 (1442 AH) | Rs 80,933 | Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Division, April 2021 |
The shar’i nisab has always been the same weight: 52.5 tola of silver or 7.5 tola of gold. Only its value in rupees changes. For a year you missed, value your wealth and the nisab on that year’s zakat date; the missed zakat guide shows how. For the 2027 figures as they are announced, see zakat 2027 in Pakistan.
How the nisab is worked out
- Take the weight: 612.35 g of silver (52.5 tola) or 87.48 g of gold (7.5 tola), with 1 tola = 11.6638 g.
- Multiply by today’s price per gram of pure metal.
- Convert to your currency at today’s exchange rate.
