How is zakat calculated in the Maliki madhab? In Maliki fiqh permissible worn jewellery is exempt, and debts are subtracted from cash, gold, silver and trade goods (but not from crops or livestock) before checking the nisab.
Maliki zakat rules used in this calculator
- Jewellery: no zakat on permissible jewellery that is used and worn (Mufti of Wilayah Persekutuan, Irsyad Fatwa 38, summarising the Maliki, Shafi’i and Hanbali view).
- Debts: debts reduce zakat on “hidden” wealth: cash, gold, silver and trade goods. They do not reduce zakat on crops and livestock (see the ushr and livestock calculator). Source: SeekersGuidance, “Which debts affect zakat”.
- Gold and silver: may be combined to reach the nisab.
- Money owed to you: a merchant pays yearly on trade debts; for a cash loan, zakat is paid when it is received.
- Nisab for cash: the calculator starts with silver and lets you switch to gold. Ask a local scholar which your community uses.
Worked example (Maliki)
Youssef runs a small shop. On his zakat date he has 40,000 in cash and in the bank, shop stock worth 60,000 at its selling price, his wife’s gold jewellery that she wears (her own, about 100 g), and a supplier bill of 20,000 due now. The amounts are in any currency.
- Jewellery: permissible and worn, so it is left out. Jewellery kept as savings or for sale would be counted.
- Zakatable wealth: 40,000 + 60,000 = 100,000.
- Debt: the supplier bill reduces cash and trade wealth, so 100,000 − 20,000 = 80,000.
- Zakat: 80,000 is far above the silver nisab, so he pays 2.5% = 2,000.
If Youssef also farmed wheat, the 20,000 debt would not reduce the ushr on his harvest, because Maliki scholars do not set debts against crops or livestock. If he owned a spare plot he does not need, Maliki scholars would first set the debt against that plot; the calculator does not ask about such assets and subtracts the whole debt, and it says so in a note.
How the Maliki result compares
- With the Hanafi result: the same when you have no jewellery, because both subtract debts. With worn jewellery the Hanafi result is higher, since Hanafi scholars count it.
- With the Shafi’i result: usually lower when you have debts, because Shafi’i scholars do not subtract them, and the Shafi’i calculation keeps gold and silver separate.
- With the Hanbali result: very close; both exempt worn jewellery and subtract debts. The difference is mostly in the nisab used for cash.
Money owed to you
For a trader, money customers owe from sales is counted every year with the stock. A cash loan you gave a friend is different: Maliki scholars pay its zakat once, for one year, when it is repaid. To do that, enter it on the Loans you will pay zakat on when repaid / doubtful debts line instead of Money owed to you, so it is left out for now. For livestock and crops, use the ushr and livestock calculator; for the date your zakat falls due, use the zakat date calculator.

Worked example in rupees (Maliki)
Take the same figures in rupees: Rs 4,00,000 in cash and in the bank, stock worth Rs 6,00,000 at selling price, worn jewellery, and a supplier bill of Rs 2,00,000 due now. The jewellery is left out, the bill is subtracted, and Rs 8,00,000 remains, above the silver nisab (about Rs 2,97,813 today). Zakat is 2.5% = Rs 20,000. Under the Hanafi madhab the jewellery would be added; under the Shafi’i, the bill would not be subtracted, giving Rs 25,000.
Who follows the Maliki madhab
The Maliki school is named after Imam Malik ibn Anas of Madinah, author of al-Muwatta’, one of the earliest collections of hadith and fiqh. It is the main school of North and West Africa, from Morocco to Nigeria, and of Sudan, and it is followed by many in the Gulf (Kuwait, the UAE and Bahrain have long Maliki traditions). Its manuals, such as the Risalah of Ibn Abi Zayd and the Mukhtasar of Khalil, give the rules this calculator follows.

- Enter debts due now; the calculator subtracts them from cash, gold, silver and stock only.
- Choose silver or gold as the nisab for cash, as your local scholars do, and press calculate.
