How much is zakat? Zakat is 2.5% (one fortieth) of your zakatable wealth once it has been at or above the nisab for one lunar year (Hanafi scholars look at the start and end of the year; the Shafi’i and Hanbali schools require it throughout). The nisab is the value of 87.48 g of gold or 612.35 g of silver; today that is about Rs 2,96,694 (silver) or Rs 31,55,882 (gold). (rate of )
What is the zakat percentage?
Zakat is 2.5% (one fortieth, 1/40) of your zakatable wealth. Divide the total by 40, or multiply it by 0.025: Rs 1,00,000 gives Rs 2,500 and Rs 10,00,000 gives Rs 25,000 (see zakat on 1 lakh rupees). The rate is the same in every madhab. Only crops (ushr, 10% or 5%) and grazing animals have different rates.
How to calculate zakat, step by step
- Add up what you own: cash at home, bank balances, gold and silver, business stock, shares, crypto, committee (BC) payments and money others owe you.
- Subtract debts that are due now, if your madhab allows it (Hanafi, Maliki and Hanbali scholars do; the relied-upon Shafi’i view and the Permanent Committee followed by Ahl-e-Hadith scholars do not).
- Compare with the nisab. Hanafi scholars use the silver nisab for cash and mixed wealth; Hanbali and Ahl-e-Hadith use whichever is lower; Shafi’i scholars in Malaysia and Singapore usually use gold.
- Pay 2.5% of the total if it reaches the nisab and a lunar year (hawl) has passed.
Why the result changes from one madhab to another
The biggest difference is jewellery that is worn. In the Hanafi madhab zakat is due on it (Darul Uloom Deoband, Fatwa 2310/H=713/th=1431). In the Shafi’i, Maliki and Hanbali madhabs permissible worn jewellery is exempt. Debts and the choice of gold or silver nisab also change the answer. Worked example
Ahmed has Rs 5,00,000 cash, Rs 15,00,000 in the bank, 3 tola of 22K gold jewellery that he owns and his wife wears, and Rs 2,00,000 of debt due now.
- Hanafi: the jewellery is counted and the debt is subtracted, so zakat is 2.5% of Rs 18,00,000 (Rs 45,000) plus 2.5% of the value of the gold.
- Ahl-e-Hadith: the jewellery is counted and the debt is not subtracted, so zakat is 2.5% of Rs 20,00,000 (Rs 50,000) plus 2.5% of the value of the gold.
- Maliki and Hanbali: worn jewellery is not counted and the debt is subtracted, so zakat is 2.5% of Rs 18,00,000 = Rs 45,000.
- Shafi’i: the jewellery is exempt and the debt is not subtracted, so Rs 20,00,000 is compared with the gold nisab (about Rs 31,55,882 today). If it is below that, nothing is due unless he chooses the silver nisab, which would make it Rs 50,000.
- Shia (Sistani): no zakat on paper money or jewellery; khums applies instead.

Frequently asked questions
What percentage is zakat?
Zakat is 2.5%, one fortieth (1/40), of zakatable wealth held at or above the nisab for a lunar year. Crops (ushr) and livestock have their own rates: 10% or 5% of the harvest, and a set number of animals.
Is zakat due on gold jewellery that is worn?
In the Hanafi madhab and according to the Saudi Permanent Committee (which our Ahl-e-Hadith calculator follows), yes. In the Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali madhabs, permissible jewellery that is worn is exempt.
Which nisab should I use, gold or silver?
Hanafi scholars such as Darul Uloom Deoband use the silver nisab for cash and mixed assets because it is better for the poor. If you own only gold, the gold nisab of 87.48 g (7.5 tola) applies.
